From the Desk of the Director General Ode Emmanuel Research Centre;

Ode Emmanuel Research Centre was a creation of Edexcel University Ifangni, Benin Republic as a research unit of the University.  The vision of Professor Ode Emmanuel the Founder and President of Edexcel University to build a University that will be relevant in the acts and arts of new discovery and improving upon the existing one socially, economically, politically and scientifically brought about the establishment of the research centre. Though still young, the research centre has been able to distinguish itself and reached out to some notable research institutes and organizations locally and internationally in the field of research for collaboration.

This trend of event at Ode Emmanuel Research Centre is being anchored by a vibrant management team under the leadership of Dr Babarinde Oye Ademola a Political Economist as the Director General of the centre, Mrs. Fadele Mojisola a Linguist/ Human Resources Manager as the Secretary and Dr. Bamikefa James a Biochemist serves as the Director of Research. To complement the effort of the management team is the ever green determination of the Founder and President of Edexcel University, Professor Ode Emmanuel, a Forensic Economist at providing a platform for evaluated discoveries that would be scientifically driven. At Ode Emmanuel Research Centre, acquisition of research base skills is considered as a paramount prerequisite for sustainable development.

 

                     SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION OF NIGERIA (SOME)

Aims: We are committed to providing participants with the necessary theoretical knowledge, which when combined with appropriate practices experience can serve as a foundation for a career as a public health professional in either a service or an academic setting.

The curriculum is designed in consonance with the general medical education curriculum to stimulate the following in students;

  • Attitudes: Excellence in the practice of a set of personal and professional attitudes which enable competent, responsible and lifelong performance as a physician.
  • Knowledge: Excellence in understanding the science of human biology and behavior.
  • Skills: Excellence in applying human science to the health of the individual, the family, the community and society at large.

Objectives: These objectives outline the learning tasks required of all students of Health and Medicine.. They define the curricular template for Health and Medical education. A student who competence in each of these areas should be able to continue training in postgraduate health/medical education leading to a career in general or specialty health, medicine, medical research, education or administration. The fundamental of health medical education as expressed in these objectives is to enable the student to think and act clinically at a defined level of competence.

The objectives include;

  • Development of successful problem– solving skills to address complex public health/ medical problems
  • Have a sound understanding of basic epidemiological theory and able to apply in a practical setting.
  • Have the necessary skills to be to analyse  public health problems and act as a resource person as the need arises.
  • Competence in the ability to engage and involve any patient in a relationship for the purpose of clinical problem solving and care throughout the duration of the relationship.
  • Competence in developing and redefining a plan of care for the prevention and treatment of illness and the relief of symptoms and suffering
  • Develop expertise in the five areas of public health, social and behavioral sciences , epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health services management and policy
  • Effectively and persincively communicate public health ideas to a target population in written and verbal format using a variety of media.
  • Understand the sociological perspective on the experience of health and illness and of the evolution and functioning of medical institutions
  • Understand the principles involved in the management of health service organizations and in planning the future development of health /medical services
  • Competence in selecting and interpreting clinical test for the purpose of health screening and prevention, diagnosis, prognosis or intervention
  • Plan implement and evaluate small –scale public health interventions
  • Conduct a community needs assessment
  • Synthesis the tools and principles of public health as applied to a new public health problems
  • Understand the principles involved in the economic assessment of health and of services for its protection and restoration
  • Competence in selecting and performing procedural skills pertaining physical examination, clinical testing and the rapent intervention
  • Able to identify, synthesis and criticize relevant published research literature and  a critical approach to the evaluation of their own and others research and analytic work

(17) Competence in the knowledge of the social, economic, ethical, legal and historical context             within which public health and medicine are practiced

(18) Competence in the development and practice of a set personal, and professional attitudes which enable the independent performance of the physician and the ability to adapt to the evolving practice of medicine and health. These attitudes are learned from modeling of faculty teaching and practice as well as from a variety of personal and other professional experiences which are readily available at the SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION OF NIGERIA (SOME)

IMPORTANCE

Our health education curricular and instruction help students to learn skills they will use to make basically choices throughout their lifetime

Since we know that effective curriculum result in positive changes in behavior that lower student risks  around alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, injury prevention, mental and emotional health, nutrition, physical activity, prevention of diseases and sexuality  and life. Therefore, we are dedicated to building students’ knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health. Health / medical education teach about physical, mental, emotional and social health. These motivate students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behavior.

We are committed also to teaching health –promoting social norms and beliefs: classroom management techniques, such as social skills training, environmental modification, conflict resolution and mediation, and behavioural management, strategies for involving parents, families, and others in student learning.

Assessing students’ performance in health education; medical updates on health information and trends

Our health education instruction focuses not only on teaching content knowledge but on teaching skills, including;

Decision –making, problem –solving, accessing reliable health and medical information, goal setting, communication, negotiation and refusal, assertiveness, and advocacy skills.

Affiliation: Society for Medical Education is affiliated to some notable Medical Institution aside from being a creation of a determined educationalist in person of Professor Ode Emmanuel, founder and president of Edexcel University Ifangni. The intention of this is to collaborate with these institutions in the area of proper training of medical students.

Education: The essence of Society for Medical Education (SOME) is to facilitate a thorough base medical education to its members in various health sciences profession such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, Medicine, Microbiology, Public Health, Environmental Health, Community Health, etc

Not only this, SOME is positioned to serve as mentor to other health training institutions

Hospital: The Society facilitates health training with the help of Ode Emmanuel Medical Centre which is the training arm of the Society and other affiliate hospitals.

Research: Being a society established by Edexcel University Benin Republic in Nigeria, the society was registered to be in charge of Medical Research and training for the university.

Membership: In order to enhance and embrace professionalism in health training, membership of Society for Medical Education (SOME) is open to the following categories of membership;

  • Studentship: This category of membership is open to the registered students with the society

Eligibility; Holders of any of the following certificates are eligible to apply for studentship.

WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, GCE etc at ordinary level with (5) credit passes not more than two (2) sittings

  •  Associate: This is the  registration level of the Society and  it is open to  the holders of BSC/ HND Nursing,, Medical  Education, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, and any other allied health science courses  The holders of this membership c certificate are eligible to use our prestigious professional letters  (ASME) after his/her name as a mark of being registered practitioner
  • Fellow Membership: This is the highest professional mark of honour of the Society for Medical Education (SOME). The eligibility to hold this professional certificate shall be holders of Masters Degree Certificate, Ph.D, Fellow of other professional bodies of not less than 10 years practice. The holders of this membership certificate are eligible to use our prestigious professional letters (FSME) after his/her name as a mark of being a registered  practitioner
  • Corporate Member: This category of membership is open to training institutions, hospitals, research institutions, universities, and any other allied corporate and health institutions
